VENICEPROJECT®

Welcome message

Simone PadoanDear Guest, I give you my warmest welcome to VENICEPROJECT®

I personally started this project, after some years of involvement in the Environmental Restoration and Industrial Redevelopment process of my hometown, Venice, as representative of the local trade association of the small and medium enterprises, because I sense what's happening here is, somehow, an example of the human struggle to find out a new sustainable and responsible model of development, rectifying the mistakes of the past, which not only affected the environment, but also the social and economic wellness.

The industrial background of the Greater Venice Area, the Veneto Region, is a system of widespread entrepreneurship, made of micro, small and medium enterprises: around 60% of the 442,278 active businesses are Sole Traders and the others have an average of 9 workers.

Even if they are individually so small, all together they produce over 110 € billion of GDP, more than 10% of Italy, they are leading the Italian export, with an incoming of 39 € billion and they actually are one of the beating heart of the high-end "Made in Italy".

Being so small is a powerful stimulation for seeking high quality, continuous improvement, innovation, competition, flexibility, high productivity, lean production, customer orientation and high customer satisfaction, but it also means a very short financial leverage, weak cash flow and the inability to achieve the global scale; it is a fact that 70% of the export stays in Europe.

By hitting the financial leverage, the Great Recession took a heavy toll on our economy and our social wellness that is hard to restore, as full demonstration we need to look at the Global Market with more courage and with a new economical model.

The Environmental Restoration and Industrial Redevelopment process of the Port and Industrial Area of Venice is the Opportunity to contribute to the World debate about new models that can balance the needs of environmental, economic and social sustainability, using what's happening here as both a case history and a living laboratory.
